Q. I'm not quite sure what Somatic Therapy is. What can I expect if I book an appointment as a new client?
A. Somatic Therapy is a service that requires multiple visits, much like psychotherapy. In Somatic Therapy, we are working to create new neural pathways in the brain. This is done through repetitive safe experiences. We meet your body and your nervous system where it's at, each time it's coming in the door. Sometimes processing work is done with the client seated in a chair, seated on the floor, standing, or lying on a massage table. The client might be invited to make body movements or sounds. Somatic Experiencing supportive touch work, Reiki, Craniosacral Therapy, hand and foot massage, weighted blankets, warm herbal packs and warm hand towels, therapeutic essential oils and aromatherapy, tuning forks, and singing bowls are all tools that could be used during a session.
1. First Visit - New Client Intake Appointment. 75 minutes duration. Erin will go over your intake paperwork and spend time learning about you and your story. There will be time spent for psychoeducation on Polyvagal Theory and Nervous System Healing. Clients will leave with some tools for grounding, resourcing, and self regulation.
2. Second Visit - Clients will begin to work on developing interoception - being able to feel into and track sensations in the body. 'Chair work' will begin - working on dialogue and the flow of the sessions. Further rapport is consciously established as clients start to get into some deeper processing.
3. Third Visit - Supportive touch and 'Table work' may be introduced if client is agreeable and it's deemed beneficial for healing. This can be beneficial for stabilization if client is out of their window of tolerance. We'll continue to work on improving interoception and moving out excess survival energy from the nervous system and body as well.
4. Continued Sessions until client feels as though their nervous system baseline has been returned to within their window of tolerance and they are bettering managing their triggers/hypervigiliance/reactivity/shutdown.
Q. How frequently do I need to come in for sessions?
A. For most clients, a bi-weekly schedule is usually a good pace for the work. Though depending on different needs, we do see clients weekly. We understand that Somatic Therapy is a cash only service and clients must be able to work within their individual budgets. We are still able to get work done on a less frequent visit schedule. We prefer a minimum visit frequency of once per month.
Q. Do you offer telephone consultations?
A. We do not generally offer telephone consultations at this time. Prospective clients are welcome to send an email to info@earthworkshealingarts.com with any questions they may have about services or becoming established as a new client.
Q. Do you accept health insurance at your office?
We are a cash practice. We accept credit card, cash, or check for payment. All payment is due at the time of service. Some HSA cards are accepted for payment as well. In some cases, we are able to provide a superbill that clients can submit to their insurance for out of network reimbursement.
Q. I can't decide if I should work with Lucas or Erin. Can I work with both at the same time?
A. Many clients at our practice see both Lucas and Erin. Though the different modalities they use are both 'bottom-up' and are both focused on nervous system healing, they are different enough from one another that they can be very complimentary when combined together.
Q. Do you offer evening or weekend appointments?
At this time we do not offer evening or weekend therapy appointments. We do however offer weekend appointments for Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy Sessions and for our Reiki Classes. Please see our regular office hours below.
Q. I don't live close enough to your office to come in regularly for sessions. How does your telehealth/remote offering work?
Our remote sessions are offered through a user-friendly website. New clients would schedule their new client intake appointments online and can email us at info@earthworkshealingarts.com to let us know you plan to do remote work. On the day of your appointment we will either text or email the website link to you. Due to licensure restrictions, Lucas can only work with clients within the State of Ohio. Erin is able to offer remote sessions to clients who are located within Ohio and also outside of Ohio.
